What is PRP and What is it Used For?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is plasma with a high concentration of platelets, which contains a large amount of growth factor proteins. These proteins can initiate and accelerate new tissue growth within the tendons and ligaments to repair damage and relieve symptoms. The procedure involves a collection of a blood sample from you and then spinning down the blood to harvest the plasma with a centrifuge. The sample of highly concentrated platelets will be re-injected into the site of the injury or pain. Laboratory studies have shown that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can potentially speed up the healing process. Platelet-rich plasma injections can be used to treat a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including: arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, joint pain, ligament sprains or tears, and plantar fasciitis.

After Care from PRP Injections

After platelet-rich plasma injections, patients may experience soreness and aching for several days, which is a sign that the healing process has begun. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may be taken if needed to help alleviate these symptoms. You can return to work and other normal activities immediately after treatment but should avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 3-5 days after the procedure. For many patients, platelet-rich plasma injections offer significant relief from pain and other symptoms and eliminate the need for surgery or long-term medications. This treatment also promotes the healing process and allows patients to return to their normal activities faster than with some other nonsurgical treatments.

Is the Procedure Safe?

Since the PRP is produced from the patient’s own blood, there is very little risk for complications with this procedure. There is always a risk of infection with any type of injection, but most patients undergo this procedure with no problems.

How often is PRP done?

​

After the first treatment, patients are seen for a follow up in 6-8 weeks. Usually only 1-3 treatments are necessary.

Most insurance companies do NOT typically pay for PRP procedures. If your insurance should apply any amount of those charges to patient responsibility (copay, coinsurance, deductible, etc.) then you will be responsible for those charges.
